God is Full of Surprises
“Orpah kissed her mother-in-law; but Ruth clave unto her.”-Ruth 1:14
Both Orpah and Ruth faced undeniable disappointment and loss. They had great hopes when they got married to Naomi’s sons. However these hopes were short-lived, dashed prematurely when both husbands died even before they had the opportunity of giving birth. It was even worse for Naomi. She not only lost her sons suddenly but also her husband.
Naomi had left her home land with her husband to a foreign country with the hope of escaping the famine that was ravaging the land but now it was all doom and gloom and darkness for her; left high and dry. It was all over, she thought. So she decided to return home empty-handed in humiliation and shame. Her foreign adventure had ended in a disaster. Orpah kissed her mother-in-law; but Ruth clave unto her.
They were both intent on going with her but she persuaded them both to reconsider the rationale. She was old and her husband was gone. There was no hope for the future she concluded. Orpah was convinced but Ruth had made up her mind: ‘Do not persuade me to return to my land. Wherever you go, I will go. Where you die I will die. Your people shall be my people and your God shall be my God.’ What a devotion!
She saw in her mother in law what Orpah did not see and as a result of her dedication and determination she went home with Naomi and she obtained favour and through her lineage the Lord Jesus was born. It is not over until God says so. With Him all things are possible.
What bitter pill have you tasted today that is beclouding your vision? Put your hope in God. Trust Him. Keep your eyes on Him. Make up your mind to follow Him to the end, no matter what. He is full of surprises. Those who put their trust in Him will never be put to shame. He brings water out of the rock, makes rivers in the desert. Look unto Jesus, the Author and finisher of your faith and He will bring you into your promised land.
